What to Wear When Rafting

What to wear when River Rafting with New Wave Rafting Company

If you are in the process of booking a trip with the New Wave Rafting, you are probably wondering what to wear on the river. You are going to get wet! Several factors go into deciding what to wear while you are white water rafting. Time of year, time of day, difficulty of rapids, duration of rafting trip, weather forecast, water temperature and air temperature. The water of the Rio Grande is directly fed from snow melt high in the mountains. Therefore, in the spring the water can be cold. Yet, later in the summer it warms and becomes a welcome relief from the heat of the day. So here’s our top three recommendations.

Don’t Wear Cotton

No cotton for river trips.
All in heavy cotton jeans is not a good idea but their shoes are perfect.

Cotton and cold water is not a good combination. Your best bet is to choose a synthetic material that will dry fast. Staying dry, or at least drying off fast, is the key to staying warm while white water rafting.

Proper Footwear

Sandals, flip flops, or Crocs are not great options for rafting. These loose fitting styles of footwear can easily come off. Protect your feet with closed toed shoes that strap on securely. That old pair of tennis shoes that need a good washing work great.

Change of Dry Clothes

A set of dry clothes to change into after your rafting adventure is a great way to end your day. These and any item not needed on the river should be left in your car. Avoid a cold and wet ride home, bring a change of clothes.
